Let's Talk About Not Getting Pregnant

 The first thing you should know is that not having sex is the most effective way to keep from getting pregnant. But even if you’ve decided you are ready to have sex and you don’t want to get pregnant or get someone else pregnant, there are a lot of options to prevent pregnancy.

If you had unprotected sex (sex without a condom and/or other form of birth control) for any reason, you still have options to keep from getting pregnant.

If you’ve had sex without some sort of protection and are worried about pregnancy, there may be a lot of things going through your mind and it’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed, confused, scared, and unsure. Sometimes talking it through with someone close to you can help you make a decision.

What can you do to prevent pregnancy AFTER unprotected sex?

Believe it or not, there is a safe, effective way to prevent pregnancy after sex.  Emergency contraception (EC) is a type of birth control pill that you can take up to 5 days after unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy. What happens if you or someone you know was sexually assaulted?

If you or someone you know has experienced a sexual assault or been forced to do something sexually that they didn’t want to do. Who can you contact for reliable information about preventing pregnancy?

If you’re worried about a possible pregnancy, talk to someone you trust about your options. I know it might seem really scary, but you should try talking with your parents.  If you don’t feel like you can talk to them, your doctor or a family planning counselor can help.
